RAJASTHAN - FORTS
Taragarh Fort - Kota
Located at a distance of
around 39 km off Kota, Taragarh Fort was the home of a major
princely state at the height of the Rajput heydays.
Junagadh Fort - Bikaner
The fort is located in
Bikaner. It is one of the finest of Rajput monuments. Raja Rai
Singh, Akbar's contemporary started building Junagadh Fort in
1587.
Chittorgarh Fort - Chittorgarh
The fort is on a
280-hectare site on the top of a 180-metre-high hill, which
rises abruptly from the surrounding plain.
Amber Fort - Near Jaipur
It is situated 11 km
from Jaipur. It was once the ancient capital of Jaipur State.
Raja Man Singh, the Rajput commander of Akbar's army started
the construction of the fortress palace was in 1592.
Jaigarh Fort - Jaipur
Also known as the fort
of victory, Jaigarh Fort is a rugged structure built in 1726
by Sawai Jai Singh. It was the royal treasury for several
years. The fort is perched on a cliff and is surrounded by
huge battlements with inside walkways offering stunning views
on all sides.
Mehrangarh Fort - Jodhpur
It is situated in
Jodhpur. Rao Jodha built the fort in 1459 when he shifted his
capital from Mandore. The fort is situated about 400-ft above
the city and has 68-ft wide and 117-ft high walls, which
dominates the surrounding plain.
Golden fort or Sonar Kila - Jaisalmer
It is situated in
Jaisalmer. Bhatti Chief Jaisal laid the foundation of the fort
in 1156 A.D on Trikuta hill. The fort is also called Sonar
Kila or Golden Fort because it is made up of yellow sandstone
and seems to ignite into a golden flame when scorched by the
desert sun.
RAJASTHAN PALACES
Amer Palace - Jaipur
The Amer palace
was built by the Kachhwajas when they rose in eminence and
power under the Mughals. Man Singh I built it in a style to
rival Mughal grandeur and opulence.
City Palace - Jaipur
From Amber, their former
capital, the Kachhwaha of Rajputs of Rajasthan moved to Jaipur.
The City Palace is the core of the royal residences in Jaipur.
Each new Maharaja made his own additions to Sawai Jai Singh's
original city palace.
City Palace - Udaipur
As the hub of Udaipur
the City Palace stands majestically on the hill guarded by
crenellated fort walls. A riot of arches, domes, turrets,
crenellations and chattris crown the steep fortress.
